After a full-fledged budget package to fund the government was blocked in the Senate, US Congress has moved one step closer to ‘government shutdown’.
Senate Democrats and some Republicans voting against moving the package forward today’s move signals that if an agreement is not reached by 1159 PM Friday, the federal government could close down.
A vote of 45-55 to move the budget package forward was a procedural vote by . Pricing in a 75% chance of govt shutdown on Saturday is the forecasting market Polymarket, which has been priced at around 75 per cent.
The package was voted against by eight Republican senators, as well as all the Democrats. The Senate Majority Leader John Thune was one of the people who voted “no” among those who were voting for him. After his last-minute negative vote, Thune asked for a review of the package so it could be returned to the agenda.
But Democrats say they are ‘blocking’ the process because the six-bill package includes funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other programs. But the party claims it will not support the DHS section unless the Donald Trump administration commits to reforms that would limit the harsh practices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and end violent clashes between federal police enforcement and protesters.
In a statement, Senate Appropriations Committee Vice Chair Patty Murray said she would vote “no” after saying that the White House had not yet reached ‘a compromise to separate DHS funding from the package’. Murray said five bills funding areas like childcare, cancer research, air traffic controllers and the military could pass quickly but “the DHS section,” as it stands today, is ‘unacceptable.” Is ICE and CBP out of control,’ she added ‘It is an out-of-control . ” , ‘I’m sure it is worth reading.
A cautious sense of optimism had emerged in the Senate this morning.
