Tomorrow a Major Altcoin Will Undergo a Critical Update – Here’s What Will Change and What You Need to Know

The third major network upgrade, Fermi, is being implemented on January 14th by BNB Chain and it’s preparing to increase block production speed by about 40%.

The update aims to make the network faster and more predictable for developers and users.

Vanguard Vantage, a sub-DAO of Venus Protocol within the BNB Chain ecosystem, team leader Danny Cooper said “The change may seem small but it will make the network more resilient and responsive” especially during periods of high volatility. The improvement will “help the user experience” by reducing latency during peak trading hours, Cooper said.

But the update comes at a time when Wall Street’s growing interest in cryptocurrencies has fuelled rout to speed up blockchain transactions and accelerate it. BNB Chain, in the context of the long-debated “blockchain triad” (the trade-off between decentralization, scalability and security), has so far adopted an approach that prioritizes speed and adversity.

In this debate, however (on January 3rd), Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin argued that technical innovations like PeerDAS and zero-knowledge virtual machines were helping to overcome the trilogy while this discussion continued.

Upon academics, BNB Chain continues its tradition of naming upgrades. This upgrade is based on Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi, who developed the world’s first artificial nuclear reactor. Two major improvements were named after Blaise Pascal and James Clerk Maxwell, who had made the previous two big upgrades.

Similarly, the Fermi update doesn’t just shorten block times. It seeks to make confirmations more predictable by reducing the network’s finality time to around 1 second, which it hopes will reduce. This is likely to reduce risks such as slippage in volatile market conditions.
